RoughRiders Hockey Club (RRHC) is proud to announce the details for the RoughRiders Youth Hockey League (RYHL) & Instructional Program (IP) for the January-February session of 2024.
NEW RYHL Structure!
Starting in the 2023 September-October session and continuing in the 2024 January-February session, RRHC is introducing a change in structure to elevate the RYHL experience for participants. A pinnacle feature of this transformation is the introduction of pre-formed teams, each led by dedicated coaches, fostering an environment of unity and strong camaraderie among players. The six-week session will witness 8u, 10u, and 10u+ players thoughtfully selected to join their respective teams based on their age and ability. Throughout the session, standings will be kept and will be posted on our RYHL webpage.
The key benefits of this revamped RYHL structure include:
- Enhanced Team Dynamics: Pre-set teams enable players to forge deeper relationships, imbuing a profound sense of unity and shared purpose within the league.
- Focused Coaching: Each team will be under the guidance of a designated coach, ensuring personalized feedback and skill enhancement throughout the RYHL journey.
- Thrilling Standings and Competition: The incorporation of standings injects an element of excitement, competition and FUN to each and every game!
Parents are encouraged to keep in mind the following details:
This transition to the new RYHL structure hinges on registration numbers. Should specific age groups lack sufficient registrants, the transition might be subject to adjustments. *Reminder: RYHL participation is included in 8u and 10u Travel Tuition, so no need for separate registration.
To accommodate varying numbers of teams and ensure convenience, players may have games scheduled at differing times from week to week. However, all games will be held either at 5:00pm or 6:15pm on Mondays.
Instructional Program (IP)
IP is the skills portion for all players looking to improve on their individual skills. The focus in the Instructional Program is designed to assist in the players’ individual skills such as skating, passing, puck control, shooting, and game sense. IP is a valuable program for all players as learning proper technique and/or retraining of fundamentals is vital part of success in games long term. The IP practices are designed and ran by RRHC’s Executive Director, Dustin Timm with the assistance from experienced and knowledgeable coaches within RRHC.

RoughRiders Youth Hockey League (RYHL)
The RoughRiders Youth Hockey League provides the opportunity for our players to go out and just play. To play and compete against other players. RYHL will be played 3v3 or 4v4 cross-ice to maximize the number of puck touches and play making in a small area. The game of hockey is a series of small decisions and RYHL is a great place to build that.
RYHL included in 8U & 10U Travel Hockey Costs

“The coaching and organization of IP is above anything else offered in the area. Players are on the ice at their scheduled time and actively engaged for the whole training session. Station work per the ADM model is followed precisely with each group getting the same amount of quality time at each station. The coaching staff looks professional in matching gear and interacts with each kid on a personal level. My kids have never come off the ice and stating they had a bad experience. Dustin and his crew are doing great things in the IP program and more athletes should be taking advantage of this great resource in the Cedar Rapids area.“
“Cedar Rapids IP is the reason why our kids have made vast improvements in the game. The skill-based work is so appreciated by our kids and our family. Dustin and his group are doing great things to develop well rounded hockey players. The IP program is some of the best group skill sessions my kids have ever attended and they have been to a lot!”
“Having the option of playing and paying 2 months at a time for the IP is super beneficial for our household as we cannot always commit or participate in a full season. The cost also is very effective for what they are getting out of the program. Coaching is top notch. While there are some parent coaches, coaches have a clear knowledge of the game and are there for all kids. The ADM station model is fantastic because as a family we are more worried about our children improving their skills than scrimmaging for multiple practices in a row. Also, having coaches wear the same warm-up is a game-changer. It just makes the whole program as a whole look that much more professional.”
